John Stewart - Castle Stewart
Sometime MP and Clerk of the Pipe in the Court of Exchequer in Scotland.
Son of William Stewart and Isabel Maxwell. Married (ca. 1735) to Jean Craik. He had at least two sons, Alexander (c. 1739-1794) and William (1737-1797), both of whom were elected for parliament.1
Stewart visited Patrick Heron's Kirroughtrie estate during Boswell's stay at that place on October 1, 1762. Boswell described Stewart as "a man of sense and business". Stewart seems to have been a relation of Heron's, his father's second wife being a Heron herself.
Unless otherwise noted, the source for a dated quotation of Boswell's is generally the corresponding volume of the Yale Trade Editions of Boswell's journals.
