View of Fort Augustus with the Caledonian Canal running through and Loch Ness in the background

Originally a small village known as Kiliwhimin, it was renamed Fort Augustus after the fort that was built there from 1729 to 1742 as a consequence of the 1715 Jacobite rebellion. It is located at the southern end of Loch Ness, and is today a popular but unassuming tourist destination for nature loversn Nessie-hunters and as a stop-over for those travelling on the Caledonian Canal.

Fort Augustus offers plenty of options for accomodation, including the beautiful lakeside Highland Club, and The Lovat, located in the old station hotel, built in 1869.
