John Smith - M.D. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford
According to Boswell "A gentleman born at Maybole in Ayrshire, but who has been nineteen years at Oxford and gives lectures on anatomy, and is also well employed as a physician."1 Dr. John Smith, M.D. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford.
Boswell met Dr. Smith on April 23 and 24, 1763 during his visit to James Macdonald in Oxford. Boswell found him "learned, clever [and] agreeable".
Unless otherwise noted, the source for a dated quotation of Boswell's is generally the corresponding volume of the Yale Trade Editions of Boswell's journals.
