James Boswell died in 1795 believing he had touched and kissed a cache of Shakespeare's original letters and papers discovered by a Mr. Ireland. His friend, Edmond Malone, publicly exposed the lot as a forgery just a year later.
Half-brother to the wife of Karl David Kircheisen.
Life with Boswell:
Boswell met him at the Kircheisens in Berlin on August 27, 1764, describing him as a "captain of the cavalry, [who] was so much wounded that he quitted the service. He is a changable, splenetic, unhappy man."
